Chris Duncan is one
of the world’s foremost exponents of Scottish fiddle playing. As a
teenager Chris was introduced to Scottish music through his
involvement in country dancing. Then, as lead fiddler in the dance
band "Harp and Claymore", he honed and perfected his skills for the
next 21 years.
Always keen to
expand his horizons, he toured Canada with "Coalbrook Ceilidh Band",
attended Alasdair Fraser’s "Valley of the Moon" fiddle school 3
times, travelled to Cape Breton to study and teach, as well as
exploring Scottish fiddle music in Australia with anyone who was
interested.
In 1996 Chris
recorded his first CD, "Sandy Ower the Sea" with the fine Scottish
pianist Muriel Johnstone. Then the ABC Classics recording "Fyvies’
Embrace" with Catherine Strutt on piano and Julian Thompson playing
cello, was released in 1999. This album went on to win the trio an
ARIA for the best world music album in the year 2000.
Not content with
just performing, Chris has also established himself as a respected
teacher of the Scottish fiddle idiom, giving classes in Australia
and overseas.
Discover the fire,
passion and grace of the Scottish fiddle repertoire when Chris plays
airs, jigs, strathspeys and reels at their vibrant best.
